Other SSH Clients

PuTTY is a free open-source terminal emulator which lets you initiate interactive command-line sessions to UITS Unix servers.  SSH is often used for text-based access to the remote hosts, however it is possible to run most graphical (X-Windows) applications remotely as well. This requires X-Windows software on your computer as well as a very fast internet connection. From on campus, this is a viable option. For many other situations where a graphical environment is needed, a VPN session might be a better choice. (Depending on the situation, this may use SSH underneath.)

PuTTY will only connect to a computer running SSHD, which is part of the standard campus unix installation. If a local X-server, such as X-Win32, is installed and running, unix graphical programs can be run -- their window will appear on the local display.
